Abstract

Triphalangeal thumb, published the first case by Struther in 1863, is characterized by the interposition of an extraphalanx between the two phalanges of the thumb.
It is a rare congenital deformity and the etiology is obscure.
The morphologic characteristics of extraphalanx varies from a triangular bone to a normal phalanx and its abnormal epiphyseal plate cause progressive angular deformity of the digit with growth.
Authors have experienced 2 cases of triphalangeal thumb, one case occurred simultaneously with polydactyly of opposite thumb, which was corrected by excision of delta bone and corrective osteotomy, the other case occurred bilaterally, which were corrected by closed wedge osteotomy, excision of delta bone and partial epiphyseal plate resection respectively, and hereby we present our results with brief clinical review.
